All of the world, people have been enjoying the sport of scuba diving for many decades. If you like going into the water, especially if you enjoy snorkeling, you will absolutely love scuba diving as your next sport to master. Local community centers nationwide typically have information regarding certification courses in scuba diving. There is a huge difference between going in the water to learn and reading a magazine article on the subject. What you need to do is get experience by doing the diving, and also mingling with veteran divers that can help you out. Dive master certification is definitely a way to go, especially if you love scuba diving and would like to teach others how to do the same. The following will present tips and suggestions that you should consider, specially if you plan on spending a lot of time diving during the summer.

As in prior publication, we strongly suggest the importance of being skillful in the application of air utilization. This is actually a well known subject for those who have been diving for a long time. The intentions are focused on helping the new scuba diver as much as possible, though, because efficient breathing and use of air is important. So, another tip is to use the minimum amount of motion or movement while diving. Once you get a little experience, shoot for using your arms as little as possible. Your fins have the efficiency that you need. To decrease your air consumption you should take on a restful stance for your arms and allow your fins to take on the job.

The next thing that you need to consider is developing breath control, something that most beginners do not have. It is very important to learn how to breathe efficiently underwater and it is much more difficult than many initially think. When diving underwater, the last thing you want to do is hold your breath. Not breathing is directly related to how buoyant you are; you must never stop breathing or your buoyancy levels will begin to erode. In addition, you want to breathe as comfortably as possible to avoid using too much air, too quickly. In time you will know and understand all the little things that will affect your buoyancy and rate of air consumption.

Gerber Knife

It is a very good idea, prior to your descent into the water, to begin equalizing. The popular Valsalva maneuver is used by many divers to clear their ears out before going into the water and descending into the deep. More than likely, even if you do not dive, you have done this before. By gently blowing your nose, while pinching it shut, you can equalize yourself before diving. You should equalize yourself prior to descending into the water using the Valsalva maneuver a few times before going in.

The goal is to make sure your ears are pre-pressurized before you start to descend which will make equalization much easier. So before you go under, do this technique, and you will have no problem equalizing the pressure in your ears.

After reading this, understand that there are many more suggestions and tips that you can find on the topic of scuba diving. It is important to always learn as much as you can and to get as much experience in the water as possible. To be as safe as you can, always take a buddy with you on every dive and pay attention to their location.

Stone Town Wreck: The Penguin

In 1919 as a result of increased shipping through the harbor after the First World War, the Zanzibar Government decided to build a new dock capable of taking vessels alongside at all tides. Construction commenced in 1920 and it was soon evident that a dredger would be required. The Penguin was purchased for £20,000, from South Africa, and arrived on 27th of February 1922 when it began dredging in front of the wharf.

All went well until it was revealed that there were large numbers of rocks not of Zanzibar origin buried in the seabed. This caused a flurry of correspondence. It was determined the stones were used as ballast and dumped in the harbor by trading dhows in times gone by.

The dredger worked well pumping thousands of cubic yards of sand, until the dredge Master resigned and the pontoon came to a halt. The Crown Agents in London were asked to recruit a suitable replacement, with the condition that not only should he be familiar with steam machinery, but that he be of sober and steady habits and of strong physique. The dredging continued until it was noticed that the volume of material being pumped had fallen dramatically. The pumps were dismantled and found to be worn out and the parts sent to Bombay for overhaul. Some months later the Penguin returned to service.

By 1929 the dredger had completed the task and was laid up pending disposal. It was considered beyond economic repair and suggested the vessel be sold or sunk after the removal of the machinery. Three years later the dredger was still laid up and being considered for further work.

70 years later the Penguin was discovered lying in 120 feet of water some three miles off the Zanzibar shore, and initially defied attempts to identify it, being described as a crane barge or a small tug. A recent Zanzibar dive on the site by the author finally identified it as a steam powered dredger. The tell tale clues being the overboard discharge pipes and the twin compound engines connected to two delivery pumps with the main suction pipe lying on the sea bed alongside.

The large Scotch boiler is very prominent and this together with the two compound engines had led to the theory of a tug. Research in the Zanzibar Archives photographic collection showed the vessel with a large funnel, pumping material during the building of the main wharf back in the 1920s. How the dredger came to be in its present position is unclear. Was it scuttled or did it sink by accident? From its present position it would appear to have been sunk deliberately…Source: Kevin Patience.

The Penguin

Builders: William Simons, Renfrew, Glasgow, Scotland. 1905.
Length: 90 feet.
Beam: 25 feet.
Machinery: Twin 2 cyl. compound steam engines.
Position: West of Pange sand bank.

Scuba Diving is a extremely fascinating and rewarding point for quite a few persons to do. This sort of activity gives humans access to what life is like and life thrives underwater at quite a few numerous depths. A lot of what science has learned about life under our vast oceans has occur from scuba diving and without having it we would be missing a ton of excellent knowledge about life on Earth.

The word SCUBA originally stood for self-contained underwater breathing apparatus. However, the word SCUBA these days has extremely taken over a life of its personal and not many folks even know the word was originally an acronym. Scuba diving takes on many types of types inside the personal divers to the professional divers. Many men and women enjoy scuba diving as a recreational endeavor when they first start out. However, in several cases, individuals come to be rather addicted to scuba diving due to the life underwater which is not rarely witnessed by human eyes.

Scuba diving also includes a professional or firm aspect to it as well. Not only is selling Scuba equipment just like re-breathers or oxygen tanks a huge income maker but numerous organizations employ divers to try and do work that would otherwise be unattainable. These kinds of divers take component in numerous civil engineering tasks that relate to finding new sources of oil, welding together structures underwater along with building platforms way off shore to procure oil and for other purposes as well. Always times taking a boat out on the water for repairs is also quite costly that’s why divers are hired to produce minor repairs to boats that will be fixed underwater. These divers also make significant visual inspections of vessels and structures to make sure they’re sound and stable.

The military and several police agencies use divers very extensively today. The military applications of scuba diving are extremely where this phenomena originated. Navy “frogmen”, as they had been called, would sometimes aid torpedoes into their targets or these soldiers have been named upon to sabotage boats or other structures that had a base underwater. That is also a great way to infiltrate an enemy held area as an underwater approach is hard to detect and usually times really silent. Police agencies also employ scuba divers because numerous times crimes and criminals dump evidence for instance stolen household and even bodies inside a water way that may be not simply obtainable to regular recovery techniques. Scuba diving teams have come to be mainstays of many police agencies as a result of the several numerous bodies of water all within the country.

ZANZIBAR SNORKELING – SNORKELERS PARADISE

The wonderful corals of Zanzibar snorkeling offer a stunning experience for every snorkeler in Zanzibar. Regarded among the best in the world, Zanzibar snorkeling and diving areas will thrill you and give you an unforgettable Zanzibar holiday. More than 350 different fish species are recorded here alone, and most of the reefs are covered in beautiful hard and soft coral.

General Marine Animals

Some of the most common species you should expect to see while snorkeling in Zanzibar are butterfly fish, parrot fish, clown fish, box fish, lion fish, angel fish, stingrays and many more. Other Zanzibar snorkeling wonders include turtles, dolphins, lobsters, squids, crabs, nudi-branches, starfish cucumbers, sponges, shrimps, sea urchin etc.

The deep water around Zanzibar attracts some of the real giants of the Indian Ocean and sometimes we see the amazing Humpback Whale very close to the beaches. Another fish is the friendly Whale Shark that sometimes allows snorkelers to come very close. This giant is despite its name and size a harmless and friendly encounter. It’s the best find while snorkeling

Guidelines on how to snorkel in Zanzibar:

Our Zanzibar snorkeling excursions are done on both the Jamboree Dhow as well as the Boston Whaler.

The Jamboree dhow takes up to 20 guests and the Boston Whaler up to 6 snorkelers. We, of course, provide you with snorkeling equipment like quality masks, snorkel and fins.

Life jackets will be on board and we highly recommend these to be used while snorkeling and definitely by kids, insecure swimmers or any guest with any disability.

Snorkeling in Zanzibar – The Sites:

Mnemba Atoll

The famous snorkeling island of Mnemba Atoll is located south-east of Nungwi and it is a must to see. With its clear water and amazing coral reefs, this is a top spot for diving and snorkeling in Zanzibar. This is also where you get the best chances of seeing dolphins and turtles in the deeper waters. The light surrounding this atoll is unbelievably beautiful.

Tumbatu Island

Tumbatu Island is the mysterious and unspoiled snorkeling spot on the north of Nungwi. A permit is required in order to go to this Island and therefore only very few tourists go there to snorkel. However, we can go to the beautiful reefs surrounding this island and they are truly amazing with myriads of fish and corals.

Mwana wa Mwana

This small island just north of Tumbatu has a coral garden that is absolute world class. The variety of soft coral here is stunning and the colors of this reef are truly one of a kind. Shoals of reef fish habitat this little underwater paradise where time will fly away.

Kendwa Reef

This reef runs along the beach of Kendwa south of Nungwi. Parts of this reef are still fantastic, but sadly some areas have been spoiled through the time. We will take you to the best snorkeling areas and you will get a view of Kendwa Beach which is probably the most beautiful beach on Zanzibar.

ZANZIBAR DIVING – LEARN & ENJOY YOUR DIVES

Zanzibar offers the best corals in East Africa, that’s a fact! Diving in Zanzibar is well-known for its amazing beaches and unspoiled village life in areas like Paje and Kendwa. The stretch reaching from Kizimkazi through Jambiani, Paje, Bwejuu, Dongwe to Michamvi, is often referred to as the secret coast of Zanzibar diving, where the real identity of the island is still preserved and untouched from mass tourism. Then this amazing stretch goes all the way to the north coast of Nungwi.

Stone Town Dive Site

Dive Site #1: Bawe

Bawe has a reef stretching around it with a maximum depth of 18m. Here you will find attractive corals like Acropora, Stag horn, Brain corals and a large variety of reef fish.

Dive Site #2: Wrecks

Wreck diving for all levels:

The Great Northern: At 12m the Great Northern (built 1870) sank on New Year’s Eve 1902, a British steel cable laying vessel. She has become a outstanding artificial reef after these many years and is home to a number of Leaf Fish, Lion Fish and Geometric Morays. Parts of the ship can still be identified and some leftovers may still be found though not taken. The Great Northern is an ideal wreck for the beginner diver as it is only 12m and is a snorkeler’s paradise.

The Royal Navy Lighter: At 30m a wreck of the Royal Navy Lighter. It is a habitat to large schools of Rainbow Runners, Trevally, Sweepers, Yellow Finned Goat Fish and sometimes Reef Sharks. For experienced Advanced Divers and above.

Dive Site #3: Murogo

Maximum depth 24m. Murogo has a sloping reef wall with a huge variety in coral and fish. Turtle are usually seen on this dive, and this is usually our preferred third dive site for the Open Water Diver course. Only 25 minutes away from our dive shop in our traditional Zanzibar Dhow powered by a 100hp Volvo Penta.

Dive Site #4: Nyange

This reef is the largest of all reefs on the west coast and contains several diving sites, all of which are unique. A new species of coral has recently been identified on this reef and marine biologists believe it to be endemic to Nyange. We are the only dive shop to dive this reef on regular basis. The sites dived are called Turtles Den, Groupers Play Ground and Coral Bay.

Dive Site #5: Boribu

One of the best dive sites off Zanzibar. Our dive shop is the only dive operator in Stone Town able to transport divers to this pristine reef. Boribu is only 45 minutes by our fast custom made fiberglass boat. Huge Barrel Sponges, enormous Gorgonian fans, large Moray eels pelagic fish, large lobsters are all features of this dive. In season, Whale Sharks pass through. The maximum depth is 30m. Boribu has an underwater reef unlike any other in Zanzibar with beautiful mountains of varying corals including the spectacular columnar corals.

Dive Site #6: Pange

Pange reef is the first sand bank west of Zanzibar Town, maximum depth 14m. An enormous variety of coral and lots of tropical reef fish such as Clown Fish, Parrot Fish, Moorish Idol and many others. Pange is ideal for Open Water Diver courses, as it offers calm and shallow waters. After the sun goes down why not try a night dive, where you may see cattle fish, squid, crab and other night dwellers.

Mnemba Atoll Dive Sites

Dive Site #7: West Gardens

Depth to 12m. A good spot for snorkelers and novice diving.

Dive Site #8: Aquarium

Take your time looking for Flounders, Scorpion fish, Stonefish and Soles. These fish lie on their side buried in the sand, and are very well camouflaged. For most of the year you will be treated to the beautifully-patterned Striped Dolphin, but the Bottlenose, Spinner and common Dolphins also occur in the clear waters around Mnemba.

Dive Site #10: Kichwani

Deep, clear, drift dive from 20m to 40m depending on the divers experience. Many coral species including Mushroom, Moneycombe, Brain and Stag horn Coral to name just a few. On your silent drift along this wonderful wall you will be passed by different species of pelagic schools of Rainbow Runner, Blue fin Trevally and sometimes Common Dolphin fish. Along the edge of the wall you find some overhangs and small caves often filled with Lobsters.

Diving means much more than viewing fish. This will also add treasure and minerals search, such as. Scuba diving the wreck is usually a unique type of scuba diving, Diving to shipwrecks as well as (occasionally) attempting to find sunken treasure.

New divers in many cases see this gross, spit inside your mask is an admitted way to finish the misting at depth. You can get expensive de-fogging spray that experts are usually addressing as “spit in a can” (this prevented me to buy it!).

Things appear larger underwater – Yes, you look fatty in that wetsuit.

There’s something termed a 60-foot scuba diving club, which is equivalent to the mile high Club. (It’s far more buzz over truth, if I’m truthful, however it sounds intriguing to me!)

If you read about full penetration diving, it’s nothing to do with all the 60-foot Club! Full penetration wreck diving is really a term that incorporates Diving into the wreck, outside the “light zone”. A lot of recreational wreck Diving is not penetrating, or light infiltration. You will need refined training and specially designed equipment for full penetration wreck diving.

Sharks do not like the taste of rubber, so always wear a wetsuit.

Most sharks are afraid of more than you are, so do not worry if you see one.

Sharks do not fill out surveys on their tastes and fears, because of which the above facts can be wrong – work with caution!

Scuba Diving allows you to get married underwater, but don’t expect all these uncomfortable great-aunt’s family on the side of your father come to the wedding (in fact, this can be a great advantage).

Whale sharks are scary name and the biggest fish in the ocean, but evidently, they are afraid of underwater bubbles(at least, an explanation that the local residents in Exmouth, Western Australia suggested that, why do they seem happy to swim with snorkeling)

Scuba diving skills can be used as college credit for some courses. Who says College must be hard work? (You will need an official transcript from the Organization, preparing you to contact them to learn more.)

There are some 5300 diving PADI (Professional Association of diving instructors) centres operating in 180 countries, and NAUI (National Association of underwater instructors) argues that tens of thousands of associate members, shops and service centers in the world. So don’t limit, diving in your area. Check the opportunities for diving, every time you go on vacation.

PADI offers specialized training in various types of diving, such as wreck diving, underwater photography and ice Diving courses, which include “hole cutting procedure”. Some people feel, obviously, ice Diving fun sport. I like my experience scuba diving in temperate and tropical waters and ice diving pretty crazy.

Whenever you scuba dive, you are likely to come across water would be similar or slightly cold temperatures at depth compared to at the surface. In my opinion ice Diving is surely an exemption, since water is, by definition, will have to be warmer than the ice-but I still consider it may be too freezing surely.

Coral is a living organism, this means that Australia’s great barrier reef is definitely one of the largest living things on this planet.

In case you immerse by yourself having cold or sinus problems can be painful. And even if you sneeze in your own mask at a depth of gross factor of spit, it will pale.

You will under no circumstances look graceful, strolling the Earth, wearing a set of fins-especially in case you are dressing up in typical scuba equipment.

Scuba diving has become one of the most popular recreational activities in the world today. For as long as we know people have been fascinated with the ocean and the creatures that inhabit the waters beneath our feet. It wasn’t until recent times, that people have had the opportunity to see what lurks beneath our oceans due to the advancements in scuba diving technology over the last few decades. Well when we talk about scuba diving, we tend to get a little confused. Really, it has only been around for the last couple of decades. Other forms of diving such as free diving date back thousands of years ago to 4500BC when coastal cultures in Greece used to practice diving for methods of gaining food, warfare purposes and commerce such as gathering underwater pearls for example.

Scuba diving is an exciting and exhilarating hobby that allows you to view an underworld life most won’t ever see firsthand. When you are diving, you are given an intimate show of what life looks like below the water line. But, it takes a certain type of person to be able to go scuba diving because it is dangerous. Not only do you have to worry about losing oxygen, but what about the threat of underwater creatures?

Sharks and eels are probably the two creatures that strike fear into the hearts of most people when they think about scuba diving. But, actual attacks are very rare and your chances of getting killed or hurt are slim. Still though, you do have to think about what would happen if you were diving and came face to face with an angry shark. Your wet suit wouldn’t do anything to protect you against those teeth. So, think about that long and hard before you jump off that boat next time.

Though it is a scary thought, perhaps that’s the appeal for many scuba diving fanatics. Not only do you get to see the amazing underwater life, but you are also in a constant state of threat that something could go wrong at any minute. But, diving isn’t the only hobby that’s fraught with danger, think about rock climbing, bungee jumping and white water rafting. People love these activities for the thrill and the high they get. So, scuba diving probably isn’t any different and you get the added bonus of seeing vibrantly colored fish and exotic sea creatures as well.

Today this recreation is enjoyed by millions of people worldwide and there are many societies and clubs set up for people who are interested in this wonderful recreation. If you want to start scuba diving all you have to do is find where the nearest scuba diving school is and complete a short course that will teach you everything you need to know about spending time underwater. Once you have finished your course you will have the opportunity to dive in the open ocean and explore the fantastic array of activity beneath the ocean. It’s always good to learn this way so you’ll know what to do in case of an emergency as well. Buy a quality wetsuit and other diving essentials and you’ll be a diving pro in no time!……………….

Article by Abel Smith

Scuba diving has long been a popular sport for travelers around the world. There is a certain excitement that comes with seeing the world as it is from beneath the ocean. The rich marine life and crystal clear water can make for an amazing vacation and one that will not be forgotten. Scuba diving will provide the thrill of a lifetime while also taking you to some of the most unique places on Earth.

Throughout the world there are several destinations which offer for great scuba diving. The Caribbean is one of these locations, and it is renowned for its diving. It’s no surprise that all three of the following dives are located there.

First off, when you are a beginner, you need not worry because there are a lot of good beginner diving sites that you can go out to. Not only that but there are a lot of trainers that will help you in learning how to dive. There are also a lot of good equipment that you can use when you want to go out and experience how to dive. In Boracay, you can experience how it is to dive and you can be treated to a wonderful scenery even if the site is a beginner site. However, as you progress to learn the different skills that you need in scuba diving, you can be assured that if you want a more challenging dive site, there other places that you can go to.

Hawaii scuba diving presents an assortment of beautiful tropical fish and some of the most gorgeous coral formations all through the island chain, which makes it one of the best scuba diving locations as well. Maui or Kauai is an excellent way to take pleasure in the marine life of the islands. Operators, resorts, dive boats, and dive shops are on hand throughout Hawaii. The warm water dives amidst large green sea turtles, hundreds of brightly colored fishes, and sharks, adds to the excitement and thrill of every scuba dive.

One of the most popular and best scuba diving locations, Florida keys boasts of lovely coral formations, luxuriously warm gulf water, and of course the abundance of tropical fish. Florida also offers thousands of dive locations that offer limitless diving adventure and packed with quality diving stores, operators, and instructors that can assist one to discover the best of Florida scuba diving.

Did two dives here, off of the Coral Cay Beach. I do not know the names of the spots as I dove with a non-english speaking fisherman (not recommended). The water was great, 85 degrees year round, but visibility was only about 100 feet, but I think this was due to the rough water (about 6 foot swells).

This diving was the best “terrain diving” I have ever done. There was not a whole lot of fish life, but the walls and reefs were incredible. The first dive was on a wall going from 60 feet to 180 feet. There were some large eagle rays and schools of grouper, but what held my attention was the sheer magnitude of the walls. They were totally covered with reef life and there were beautiful colors everywhere. There were lots of ravines and caves to explore, and although the bottom of the wall was unreachable at 180 feet, you could see it at all times, which made the wall seem enormous in perspective.
